This is what, I think, vampire movies ought to be. What an awesome flick!
This is definitely and noticeably a low-budget affair but…..
With that said, this is one creepy movie and there are a lot of factors that play into that – particularly the location (Romania), the fx, lighting and acting is all very good for a b horror flick and, perhaps unintentionally, makes the movie that much better.
The story starts with a very brief (but it’s enough) recap of the first Subspecies film and picks up directly where the first left off. Even if you haven’t seen the first one, you still get a pretty good idea of what’s happened and what’s going on. Another thing that works in ‘Bloodstone’’s favor.
Our heroine, Michelle, has been bitten and is slowly turning into a vampire, meanwhile she is still trying to escape our villain, Radu, as this ‘change’ is not exactly working for her.
She sets out to Bucharest on a quest for her sister and they keep narrowly missing each other until reuniting later in… less than desirable circumstances.
The story plays out great in this, Anders Hove is fucking awesome as Radu and all in all – I like this one better than the first. It flows better and has the advantage of building on an already well established story base. This is what a horror sequel should be and, in my opinion, stands high on the list of low budget horror greats.
A lot of thought and effort went into this and it definitely shows. This is a movie I would keep in my collection and be able to watch (and enjoy) again.
****1/2 out of 5.
